Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987)
yes! finally, i get to see Todd Haynes’ film of the story of Karen Carpenter’s tragic demise, made with Barbies and unlicensed music, banned by Karen’s brother from public exhibition. and it is really beautiful and deeply emotional. Haynes’ Safe (1995) is one of the seminal works of the golden age of indie cinema.
now if only someone would put up Frederick Wiseman’s High School (1968) which you can only buy on VHS for like $700 if you’re a school (UPDATE: someone posted a clip here a few days ago), and maybe the full six-minute version of the Dali/Disney collaboration Destino, i’d be a happy person.
