“Back to School” Overture (1986) by Danny Elfman

Sometimes, I’ll put this on and just dance and dance, and march around the house until I simply fall down laughing. Okay, that’s untrue, but it will do wonderful things to your day. Especially during a study montage or a triple lindy.

And I think it may have influenced the theme to “Parks and Recreation” which is getting pretty funny and has one of the strongest opening credit sequences in the world.

How about that Mixolydian to make you pee your pants, right, music nerds?

UPDATE: David Friedman informs me that the “Parks and Recreation” theme song was the winning entry in a theme tune contest! The person who details the contest on this blog takes huge umbrage with the nature of a songwriting contest in which composers work and submit on spec (as opposed to the traditional method of hiring a craftsperson based on reputation), and the winning entry received $7,500 plus “customary writer’s share and participation in performance income”. The winning composers, Gaby Moreno and Vince Jones announced victory on their Myspace blog. And congratulations to them. They made a great little piece of music.
