Windows 7 Launch Party: The Twitter Joke

The way I see it, this could’ve gone a few ways:

  1. Branded Event as Meaningless Gesture

This morning, I hosted a Breakfast Sandwich 7 launch party. Later, hosting a Walk the Dog While Roasting in my Own Fever Sweat 7 launch party. Don’t forget chips for the fever sweat!

This exploits Microsoft’s self-parodic attempt to create buzz from the painfully mundane and invites us to follow suit. Which brought me where all attempts at satire eventually lead:

  2. Double Entendre (Sounds like pooping)

“Hosting a Windows 7 launch party.”

Here, the use of quotes implies what’s been adopted in Twitter yuckaluck as euphemism. Euphemism means when you say one thing, but you really mean pooping or boning. But scatology is too easy, so I ended up here:

  3. Reference to Memetic Artifact (with a Note of Social Commentary)

Running around frantic, trying to gather minorities for my Windows 7 launch party. White lady: check.

This is a direct allusion to the video that held the world in captive horror some weeks ago. Specifically, that the party we’re being recruited to throw requires a demographic sampling of folks who might never otherwise awkwardly associate in the same kitchen. It concludes with a self-referential jab in which I, as a fictional white male, would have difficulty approaching people of different backgrounds.

There. Explaining the joke makes it funnier.
