Buzz Rickson

Speaking of naval jackets, here’s a beautiful reproduction piece by Buzz Rickson. The folks there have captured both the clothing nerd and militaria nerd demographics with incredibly detailed, precise (and expensive) recreations of mid-20th-century military clothing. This particular is what’s called a deck jacket — a naval winter coat — from the 1943 design. It runs a little less than $400, but vintage pieces will cost you even more, and so, frankly, will most “inspired by” coats of much lower quality.
All I know of Buzz Rickson I learned from William Gibson’s 2003 novel Pattern Recognition in which the heroine Cayce Pollard prizes her Buzz Rickson Black MA-1 Flying Jacket above all else. Here, Buzz Rickson offers a special Pattern Recognition William Gibson Collection edition of that jacket for $485 (pictured below). But I love the one Jesse found for the Put This On even more.
By the way, since you asked, Put This On is a new web series Jesse Thorn (of The Sound of Young America) and I made. It’s a men’s style show about dressing like a grownup, and the pilot episode will be ready to look at on October 30th. Jesse is a snappy dresser and knows a lot about the subject.
