“HBO Feature Presentation” production logo ca. 1987-1994
Like a warm blanket. The old brown knit one from the cabinet under the TV, the one that smelled of mildew and VHS labeled with sharpie. The TV room blanket.
I’m the first to cop to my unabashed romantic love for the medium of the production logo. So when I found closinglogos.com yesterday, I felt, at once, at home. The site is unforgivably ugly, criminally unnavigable, and comically unorganized. But somehow, that seems the point, like the video store of decades past, with shelves sorted by the whims of its unsocialized clerks-cum-archivists. By appearances, closinglogos.com has a rich community of logoheads. I wouldn’t know how to find it, but I’m glad it’s there, as its members contribute deep explorations of a variety of production logos, closing logos and vanity logos, such as this one on the many logos of HBO.
Here’s the HBO Special Presentation logo ca. 1992. What was with our endless fascination with the wailing guitar? Satriani must’ve been a god in the hallowed offices of the networks.
