Michel Gondry on cynicism:
I don’t think I have any cynicism in me…. I hate cynicism. I wipe it from me. I don’t like cynical people. I don’t like cynical movies. Cynicism is very easy. You don’t have to justify it. You don’t have to fight for it.
On this point, I agree with Gondry. For example, cynicism is adding a laughtrack in post, pitch-adjusting the laughter to appeal to kids, and ruining a perfectly good sketch in the process. I think maybe the Nickelodeon audience of 2000 was not as sophisticated as the Nickelodeon audience of 2008. Let’s turn that cynicism upside down.
