Kubrick : centrifuge :: Jobs : iPhone?
Gruber links today to an audio interview with renowned skeptic James Randi in which Randi compares the egomaniacal whims of Kubrick to the egomaniacal whims of Steve Jobs. Fair enough.
According to Randi, the shot of Frank jogging on the centrifuge in one of Kubrick’s original cuts of 2001: A Space Odyssey was 11 minutes in length, as Kubrick intended to illustrate the tediousness of life on such a mission. Fine.
Randi then goes on to compare Kubrick’s lack of consideration for his audience in such a decision with Jobs’ refusal to consider the opinions of others when putting out bad products from time to time, such as the iPhone. Bullshit, sir!
I will note this, though, from the IMDb trivia: when reviewing potential designs for the monolith, Kubrick considered a transparent glass cube at one point, eventually passing on it because of the difficulty of lighting such an object. But transparent cube? Jobs? Am I right, guys? Apple? Kubrick? I need a hobby.
