“Lucky Star” (2002) dir. Michael Mann

What you see here is an incredible trailer made at great expense without intention of producing an actual feature.  Directed by Michael Mann in the style of Michael Mann, paid for by Mercedes-Benz in response to the previous year’s seminal web video blitz by BMW, starring Benicio Del Toro as ‘Lucky Star’ (probably not his character’s name, but how goofy would that be?).

Most interesting in a times-they-have-a-changed sort of way, response to this ad was supposedly negative as audiences felt they’d been duped into wanting to see a non-existent feature-length movie.  This day and age, six years later, doesn’t it seem as though trailer-length is the aspirational format of the media titan, that audiences would fully expect to end up feeling duped after having seen the feature-length movie, and that we’re all desensitized to the fact of the entire affair having been subsidized by product placement anyway?
