disruptive technology
do people really have the time to ingest the hours and hours of entertainment their devices provide? i am i alone in being overwhelmed by the unending stream of tv, movies and podcasts to catch up on, meanwhile maintaining relationships at work and home?
i hear the pundits talk of all that they consume through their portable tech. some of them, i’m pretty sure, have significant others. some of them even have families.
i had enough trouble keeping up with my Stories when the only place i could see them was at my house. now i have to worry about neglecting the archives collecting in my phone as well, while balancing meaningful contact with my girlfriend and our new dog? i can’t even imaging having kids and even thinking about taking out the phone to tap around in it.
i’m stirring this in my brain, and i see an appropriate snippet of an interview with Martha Stewart for Wired. apparently, she’s had some anxiety herself about the interruptive potential of these things:
“Stewart: When the Walkman first came out, I called it the Rudeman: Everybody who’s listening to those is rude to me. I think part of the reason I got divorced was because of the Rudeman.”
and at this, i follow suit - i’ve gone into iTunes and renamed my phone Rudeman. (no, i haven’t really, but i totally should.)
