Catherine Tate “Translator”
This is apparently a fairly well-known sketch from a fairly well-known British funnylady that I caught on BBCA last night.
It fascinates me the ways people internalize the phonemes of another language that they don’t speak. My girlfriend, who lived in Peru and spoke no English until 8, used to play a game called “English” with her older brother in which they’d hold entire conversations in “English”, approximating English by saying “Whooshie wisha whoosh. Awhoosha whishawhooshie whishawash,” in varying cadences.
